Obituary of Robert Clay Jr.

Please share a memory of Robert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the

shadow of the Almighty.  I will say of the Lord, “He is my

refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”  Psalm 91:1-2

We gather here this morning to celebrate the long and full life of Robert (Sonny) Clay, Jr.  God granted him ninety years of life so we have much to remember and celebrate.

Sonny was born in Cornwall, Conn. May 8, 1931, to the late Robert, Sr. and Pearl Johnson Clay.  The family moved to Amelia when Sonny was five years old.  They settled in the Winterham neighborhood and later moved over to Little Patrick Road.  He was educated in the Public Schools of Amelia.

He was married to the late Annie Johnson Clay.

Sonny was a member of Manassa Hill Baptist Church.  He also attended Oak Grove Presbyterian Church.

Sonny lived in New York, where he was employed by the Kodiak Company.  Later moving back to Amelia, he worked at Southern States, drove tractor trailer for Preston, Co. where he retired from in 1998.  Worked for himself installing Septic Systems and delivering gravel; also doing what he loved best, cutting grass.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, sisters, Mildred Byars, Elizabeth Venable, brothers, Langston, Joseph, and Theodore Clay.

He leaves to cherish his memories, sisters, Helena Lyons, Doris Booker, and Jenny Corley; brother, Howard Clay (Annette); nieces and nephews, devoted niece, Delores Lynch;  cousins, other relatives, devoted friend, LaVerne Johnson, and many friends.
