I first met Mrs. Birckhead in the fall of 1970 when Luther H Foster became Nottoway Senior High School. I was a senior, my first and only year there. She was my Home Economics teacher. She taught me how to knit, crochet and prepare income taxes, skills that I still remember. to this day.. She was a good teacher., and was very patient, no matter how many times she had to show you how to do something.
In 1999, she was one of the co-founders of the Amelia-Nottoway Chapter of Virginia State University Alumni Association, which I became a member.
Due to Mrs. Birckhead's love and dedication to Virginia State, our chapter became a chartered organization , and have given over 25 scholarships to students at Nottoway High School and Amelia County High.
Mrs. Birckhead was a Lifetime Member of Virginia State University Alumni Association.
She will be truly missed.
